- For the frosting:
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup milk
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs, one at a time, and add the vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, combine the cocoa powder, flour, baking soda, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, and mix until smooth.
- Stir in the chopped nuts, if using.
- Drop tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the edges are set and the centers are soft. Let the cookies cool on the sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the frosting: In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the cocoa powder and milk, bringing the mixture to a simmer.
- Remove from heat and whisk in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Spread the frosting over the cooled cookies and sprinkle with chopped pecans or walnuts, if desired.
- Let the frosting set before serving.
Notes
- For extra flavor, try adding a pinch of cinnamon to the cookie dough.
- If you prefer a thicker frosting, use slightly less milk in the frosting mixture.
