Description

A comforting, creamy casserole featuring tender egg noodles enveloped in a tangy sour cream sauce. Enhanced with melty cheddar and a crispy topping, this classic dish delivers warmth and satisfaction perfect for family dinners and potlucks.

Pasta & Base:

12 oz egg noodles

1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup

Sauce:

1 cup sour cream

1/2 cup milk

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, divided

1 small onion, finely diced (optional)

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Salt and pepper, to taste

Optional Add-ins:

1 cup diced ham or bacon bits

Topping:

1/2 cup crushed crackers or breadcrumbs

2 tablespoons melted butter


Instructions

  • Preheat & Prepare:

    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish lightly.
  • Cook Noodles:

    • Cook the egg noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  • Mix the Sauce:

    • In a large bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, milk, 1/2 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese, diced onion, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Stir in the optional ham or bacon if using.
  • Combine & Assemble:

    • Toss the cooked noodles with the sauce mixture until evenly coated.
    • Transfer the noodle mixture into the prepared baking dish.
    • Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup cheddar cheese evenly on top.
    • In a small bowl, combine crushed crackers (or breadcrumbs) with melted butter and sprinkle over the top.
  • Bake:

    • Bake in the preheated oven for 25–30 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbling and the topping is crisp and golden.

 

  • Serve:

    • Allow the dish to cool slightly before serving to let the flavors meld.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, try using a blend of cheddar and mozzarella cheeses.
  • This dish is versatile: adjust seasonings or add vegetables (like peas or bell peppers) to suit your taste.
