Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground pork (or ground chicken/turkey)
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups green cabbage, shredded
  • 1 cup carrots, julienned
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce (or coconut aminos for gluten-free)
  • 1 tsp rice vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp Chinese five-spice powder (optional)
  • 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)
  • 1 tbsp cilantro, chopped (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Heat sesame oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add ground pork and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
  • Add onion, garlic, and ginger, cooking until fragrant (~2 minutes).
  • Pour in chicken broth and bring to a simmer.
  • Add cabbage, carrots, soy sauce, rice vinegar, black pepper, red pepper flakes, and five-spice powder. Stir well.
  • Simmer for 10-15 minutes until vegetables are tender.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  • Serve hot, garnished with green onions, cilantro, and sesame seeds.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add more red pepper flakes or a dash of sriracha.
  • Swap ground pork with chicken or turkey for a leaner option.
  • To make it heartier, serve with cauliflower rice or shirataki noodles.
