Description

Light, fluffy, and irresistibly sweet, these cream rolls feature a tender, enriched dough inspired by the classic King’s Hawaiian recipe. Filled with a rich cream cheese blend and topped with a delicate glaze, they make the perfect treat for breakfast, dessert, or an indulgent snack.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Dough:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg

For the Cream Filling:

  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

For the Glaze:

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm milk, warm water, granulated sugar, and yeast. Stir lightly and let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  • Mix Dough: In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Add the melted butter, egg, and yeast mixture. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let rise until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  • Prepare Filling: While the dough rises, mix together the softened cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Shape Rolls: Punch down the dough and roll it out into a 12 x 9-inch rectangle. Spread the cream filling evenly over the dough.
  • Roll and Slice: Starting from the long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log. Using a sharp knife, cut the log into 12 equal pieces.
  • Second Rise: Place the rolls into a greased baking pan, cut side up. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes until puffy.
  • Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 18–20 minutes or until golden brown.

  • Glaze: While still warm, drizzle the prepared glaze (combine powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract) over the rolls. Optionally, brush with a little extra melted butter for added softness.

Notes

  • For extra richness, serve warm with a pat of butter or additional glaze on the side.
  • Feel free to adjust the sweetness in the filling or glaze to your taste.

  • These rolls are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
