Description

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tbsp oil (for frying)

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  • Make the Hamburger Steaks:

    • In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and paprika.
    • Form the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties.
    • Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties for about 4 minutes per side, until browned. Remove and set aside.
  • Make the Onion Gravy:

    • In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté the onions until soft and caramelized (about 10 minutes).
    • Sprinkle flour over the onions, stirring constantly for 1 minute.
    • Gradually whisk in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes until thickened.
  • Combine and Serve:

    • Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon the onion gravy over them, and let simmer for another 5 minutes.
    • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, use a mix of ground beef and pork.
  • If the gravy is too thick, add more beef broth to reach the desired consistency.
  • Add mushrooms for a richer taste.
