Description

Croque Madame is a classic French brunch dish featuring a deliciously cheesy ham and béchamel sauce sandwich, topped with a perfectly fried egg. It’s a rich and indulgent breakfast that pairs beautifully with fresh greens or a light salad.

Ingredients

– 4 slices of white bread

– 2 tablespoons of Dijon mustard

– 4 slices of ham

– 4 slices of Swiss cheese (or Gruyère)

– 2 eggs

– 1 tablespoon of butter

– 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese

– 1/2 cup of béchamel sauce (or store-bought)

– 1 tablespoon of butter (for frying)

– Fresh parsley (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

2. Spread Dijon mustard on two slices of bread.

3. Layer ham and cheese on the mustard-coated bread slices.

4. Top with the remaining slices of bread to form sandwiches.

5. In a pan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat.

6. Place the sandwiches in the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.

7. While the sandwiches are cooking, prepare the béchamel sauce in a separate pan.

8. Once the sandwiches are cooked, spread béchamel sauce generously on top and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

9. Transfer the sandwiches to the oven and bake for 5-7 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

10. In another pan, fry the eggs sunny-side-up.

11. Remove the sandwiches from the oven and place one fried egg on top of each sandwich.

12. Garnish with parsley and serve immediately.

Notes

– If you prefer, you can use whole-grain or sourdough bread for a different flavor.

– For a more indulgent version, add a bit of truffle oil to the béchamel sauce.

– The sandwich can also be served without the egg for a lighter alternative.
