Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 large onions, sliced into 1/2-inch rings
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk with 1 tbsp vinegar)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko for extra crunch)
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  • Prepare the Coating:

    • In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.
    • In another bowl, beat the egg and mix it with buttermilk.
    • Place breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
  • Coat the Onion Rings:

    • Dip each onion ring into the flour mixture, then into the buttermilk-egg mixture, and finally into the breadcrumbs, pressing lightly to coat.
  • Fry the Onion Rings:

    • Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
    • Fry the coated onion rings in batches for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
    • Remove and drain on a paper towel.
  • Serve:

    • Enjoy hot with your favorite dipping sauce!

Notes

  • Use panko breadcrumbs for extra crunch.
  • For a spicy kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the batter.
  • If you don’t have buttermilk, mix 1 cup of milk with 1 tbsp vinegar or lemon juice.
