Description

A hearty, comforting casserole that layers savory ground beef with tender, creamed cabbage and aromatic seasonings. This family-friendly dish delivers a perfect balance of creamy texture and meaty goodness—ideal for a cozy dinner.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 medium green cabbage, cored and shredded
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • (Optional) 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • (Optional) 1/2 cup breadcrumbs

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Cook the Beef: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic; sauté until softened (about 3–4 minutes). Add the ground beef, season with salt, pepper, and thyme, and cook until browned. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  • Prepare the Cabbage: While the beef cooks, shred the cabbage and lightly steam or microwave it for 3–4 minutes until slightly tender.
  • Mix the Cream Base: In a large bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, and beef broth. Stir until smooth.
  • Assemble the Casserole: In a greased baking dish, layer the steamed cabbage evenly. Top with the cooked beef mixture, then pour the cream base over the top. If using, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese and breadcrumbs evenly over the casserole.
  • Bake: Place in the preheated oven and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the topping is lightly golden.

  • Serve: Allow the casserole to rest for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm!

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can substitute sour cream with heavy cream or add a dollop of crème fraîche.
  • If you prefer a crunchier topping, toast the breadcrumbs in a small pan with a bit of butter before sprinkling.
  • This dish can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated; simply bake just before serving.
