Description

A playful twist on the classic candy apple—these treats feature a glossy, hard candy shell paired with a whimsical cotton candy swirl topping. Perfect for fairs, parties, or an extra-special treat that’s as fun to look at as it is to eat.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 6 crisp apples (choose firm, tart varieties for best results)
  • 6 wooden sticks or skewers

For the Candy Coating:

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
  • 1/2 teaspoon blue food coloring
  • 1/2 teaspoon cotton candy flavoring

For the Cotton Candy Swirl:

  • Pre-made cotton candy (pink and/or blue), enough to generously top 6 apples

Instructions

  • Prepare the Apples:

    • Wash and thoroughly dry the apples. Insert a wooden stick into each apple.
  • Make the Candy Coating:

    • In a deep, heavy saucepan, combine granulated sugar, corn syrup, and water.
    • Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat.
    • Continue boiling until the syrup reaches the hard crack stage (about 300°F/150°C on a candy thermometer).
    • Remove from heat immediately. Stir in red and blue food colorings along with the cotton candy flavoring.
  • Dip the Apples:

    • Working quickly, dip each apple into the hot candy syrup, ensuring a full, even coat.
    • Allow excess syrup to drip off, then immediately proceed to the next step.
  • Add the Cotton Candy Swirl:

    • While the candy coating is still hot and tacky, roll the apple in pre-made cotton candy or gently press small tufts of cotton candy onto the surface to create a swirl effect.
    • Note: The cotton candy will begin to melt and meld into the sugary shell, forming a unique, textured topping.

  • Cool and Serve:

    • Place the finished candy apples on a greased or silicone-lined baking sheet to cool and harden completely.
    • Enjoy immediately for the best visual appeal and texture.

Notes

  • Safety First: Be very careful when working with hot candy syrup.
  • Timing is Key: Work quickly once the syrup is off the heat to ensure the cotton candy adheres properly.
  • Presentation: The cotton candy topping creates an ephemeral design that is best enjoyed fresh.
  • Tip: For extra visual fun, try using different colored cotton candy to create vibrant patterns.
