Description

Authentic Canadian poutine is a comforting dish of crispy fries topped with cheese curds and smothered in rich, savory gravy. A true Canadian classic, it’s perfect for a hearty meal, especially on cold days. It’s indulgent, flavorful, and undeniably delicious.

Ingredients

– 4 large russet potatoes, cut into fries

– 2 cups fresh cheese curds (preferably white cheddar)

– 2 cups beef gravy (or chicken gravy)

– Vegetable oil for frying

– Salt to taste

– Freshly ground black pepper (optional)

Instructions

1. Preheat the oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).

2. While the oil is heating, cut the potatoes into fries (about 1/2-inch thick).

3. Fry the potato strips in batches for 4-5 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.

4. Remove the fries from the oil and drain them on paper towels.

5. In a saucepan, heat the beef gravy over medium heat until hot and simmering.

6. Place the hot fries on a serving dish or plate.

7. Generously sprinkle fresh cheese curds over the fries.

8. Pour the hot gravy over the fries and cheese curds, ensuring everything is well coated.

9. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.

10. Serve immediately and enjoy while the cheese curds are still slightly melty.

Notes

– You can use store-bought frozen fries for a quicker version, but homemade fries add the best flavor.

– If you can’t find fresh cheese curds, use mozzarella as a substitute, though it’s not quite the same texture.

– To make the dish vegetarian, substitute vegetable gravy for beef gravy.
